The Arri Alexa, more popularly known as ΛLEXΛ first came into the cinematic production world in April of the year 2010 as a digital motion picture camera system developed by Arri. The camera was Arri's first major transition into digital cinematography after smaller previous efforts such as the Arriflex D-20 and D-21.
Alexa cameras are designed for use in high-budget feature films, television shows, and commercials. Alexa uses the ALEV series of image sensors manufactured by ON Semiconductor.
The camera has several methods of recording, including SxS cards, CFast 2.0 cards, and SXR Capture Drives at resolutions up to 3424 × 2202 pixels in either Rec. 709 or Log-C to ProRes or ARRIRAW codecs. It features modularity, PL mount lenses, a Super 35 sized CMOS sensor shooting up to 3424×2202 resolution, and supports uncompressed video or proprietary raw (ARRIRAW) data.
Now, the mighty ARRI ALEXA Mini LF just became a more versatile tool than ever with the latest Software Update Package 7.0. The camera can now shoot in a wide variety of Super 35 recording modes along with a few additional large format modes as well. Other than that, three of the four Super 35 recording formats offer higher frame rates than the ALEXA Mini, while the new large-format recording formats deliver the large format look with a significantly reduced data rate (HD or UHD recording).
This makes the ALEXA Mini LF not only an enticing option for large format productions, but also for those content creators who prefer to shoot in arguably the most popular format for feature films, drama series, and commercials without the need to trade off the pristine image quality and compact form factor that the camera is so well known for.
The camera houses the same sensor as the Alexa LF inside a camera body similar to the Alexa Mini. Additional improvements over the Alexa Mini include an improved EVF (MVF-2) with larger flip-out monitor and power outputs for camera accessories. The camera also features a new Codex recording module, which accepts 1TB Codex Compact Drives

2.8K S35 16:9 – HD up to 100fps (1920 x 1080 recorded pixels)
New large-format recording modes (MFX/Apple ProRes):
4.3K LF 16:9 – UHD up to 48fps (3840 x 2160 recorded pixels)
4.3K LF 16:9 – HD up to 75fps (1920 x 1080 recorded pixels).
Other noteworthy enhancements that Software Update Package 7.0 brings to the ALEXA Mini LF include an improved magnification tool and more frame lines, Camera Access Protocol (CAP) enhancements, improved logfile exporting, system stability improvements, and more.
The Alexa has been the dominant camera in the professional film industry and was used as the primary system on over 70% of the top 100 grossing films since 2016. Since its introduction, seven movies shot on Alexa including 'Argo' and 'Green Book' had gone on to win the Academy Awards for Best Picture.
