Work 6.8x Faster on Video Editing with NVIDIA Studio Laptops

Recently while reading up on the making of Dr. Strange and James Bond 007: Casino Royale; I found out that for Dr. Strange’s car crash, it took the director wrecking 9 Lamborghinis to get the right shot and 7 Astin Martins for the Bond movie respectively. And my thought was: ‘Why didn’t they just edit or generate the scene using a computer?’

Truth is, some scenes just can’t be computer-generated or edited to interpret the director's vision. However, video editing is a crucial part of the overall success of a video or film production.

Video editing is the process of manipulating and rearranging video shots to create a new work. Editing is usually considered to be one part of the post-production process — other post-production tasks include titling, colour correction, sound mixing, etc. There are many reasons to edit a video and your editing approach will depend on the desired outcome. Before you begin you must clearly define your editing goals, which could include any of the following:

1. Remove unwanted footage

This is the simplest and most common task in editing. Many videos can be dramatically improved by simply getting rid of the flawed or unwanted bits.

2. Choose the best footage

It is common to shoot far more footage than you actually need and choose only the best material for the final edit. Often you will shoot several versions (takes) of a shot and choose the best one when editing.

3. Create a flow

Most videos serve a purpose such as telling a story or providing information. Editing is a crucial step in making sure the video flows to achieve this goal.

4. Add effects, graphics, music, etc

This is often the "wow" part of editing. You can improve most videos (and have a lot of fun) by adding extra elements.

5. Alter the style, pace, or mood of the video

A good editor will be able to create subtle mood prompts in a video. Techniques such as mood music and visual effects can influence how the audience will react.

6. Give the video a particular "angle"

Video can be tailored to support a particular viewpoint, impart a message, or serve an agenda.

The New NVIDIA Studio Laptops

Now, NVIDIA Studio ushers in a new era of creative performance with laptops and desktops purpose-built to power the world’s most innovative minds. Packed with industry-leading RTX GPUs, these machines feature vivid color displays and blazing-fast memory and storage, all precision-engineered into fully-capable laptops and ultra-powerful desktop PCs. With unprecedented levels of power and NVIDIA Studio support, even your home can become the creative studio of your dreams.

According to NVIDIA’s blog about the release from senior product manager Gerardo Delgado, the GeForce RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti laptops will hugely increase video editing speed. Delgado says Premiere Pro editors, for example, can expect 3.9x faster performance compared to when using a CPU alone, while Resolve colorists and editors can expect 6.8x faster performance than with a CPU. Meanwhile, 3D artists working in Blender will render at an impressive 24x faster than CPU alone.

There should also be performance gains on any GPU-accelerated AI features like Scene Edit Detection in Premiere Pro or apps like Video Enhance AI, which uses artificial intelligence to upscale, denoise, and restore archive footage.

Artificial intelligence acceleration

Of course, NVIDIA also has several interesting AI developments of it's own for the new laptops. For 3D and virtual production artists, NVIDIA Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) 2.0 utilizes dedicated AI processors on RTX GPUs called Tensor Cores to boost frame rates in real-time applications such as D5 Render, Unreal Engine 4, and NVIDIA Omniverse.

Meanwhile, Dynamic Boost 2.0 intelligently shifts power between the GPU, GPU memory, and CPU to accelerate apps, improving battery life; and WhisperMode 2.0 controls the acoustic volume for the laptop, using AI-powered algorithms to dynamically manage the CPU, GPU, and fan speed to deliver quieter acoustics.

Spec breakdown

Below is the spec breakdown to see how the 3050 and 3050 Ti compare:

                                             RTX 3050             TX 3050 Ti

NVIDIA CUDA Cores             2048                    2560

Tensor Cores                        64                        80

Ray Tracing Cores                16                        20

Boost Clock (Mhz)                1485                    1500

GPU Power Use                   35-80W              35-80W

Memory Interface Width    128-bit               128-bit

RAM Configuration              4GB GDDR6       4GB GDDR6

Architecture                        Ampere             Ampere

Whether you’re studying video production, computer animation, or game design, you need the right technology to excel. The media and entertainment industry relies on NVIDIA GPUs to create innovative and stunning content. In fact, NVIDIA GPUs have powered every Academy Award nominee for Visual Effects for over a decade. And now, NVIDIA Studio laptops put the same GPU technology at your fingertips so you can work faster, with larger formats and more detailed models--and with the freedom to create more immersive and extraordinary work.
