It’s been a crazy year of announcements for the cinema world. The biggest change is how the compact options have been completely transformed and now there are a plethora of high-end options in tiny bodies. As a result of the advanced technologies infused into modern camera gadgets, it has become obvious that there's almost no such thing as a bad camera these days, as nearly everything can be used to create a beautiful image.

Thanks to nanotechnology development, cameras no longer need to be complicated and cumbersome to be fit for filmmaking or shooting videos. As chips for modern technologies become smaller and smaller by the day; it has become possible to have some of the most sophisticated cameras in our pockets. And of course, add to that, the advantage of a plethora of apps that are now available to both the professional and the startup video entrepreneurs that enable them to make fascinating videos or shoot films that would hitherto have required a series of cameras to achieve.

In this series, we will take a look at several high-quality cameras that now populate the market that is capable of helping filmmakers, videographers, and amateurs alike to achieve near-perfect output in Video production.

We start by taking a look at what the 'Red Komodo' can do.

Red Digital Cinema has a long and proud history of innovation. They are constantly evolving and developing. The Red Komodo is breaking new ground in cinematography. The Komodo is an ultra-compact cinema camera with remarkable image quality, amazing color science, and innovative shutter sensor technology. It is impossible to not be impressed by the size, ability, and performance of the Komodo.

RED is the big name here and the KOMODO 6K is a new direction for the company. It’s tiny and has a global shutter that eliminates that jello effect. It still retains the 16 stops of dynamic range with this Super 35mm sensor and brings all the RED goodies, like REDCODE RAW.
The benefit of the REDCODE RAW (R3D) is that every major NLE practically supports it and its features ensuring that workflows are fairly well developed and supported, in addition to the fact that, it’s super powerful and has a ton of versatility in post.

The specs of the Red Komodo speak for themselves. It packs a lot of punch at a reasonable price point. As the name suggests, it has a 6K resolution or 6144×3240. It can handle 4K at 60 FPS or 6K FF at 40 FPS. The Komodo has a Super 35 sensor and, significantly, a global shutter mode.

Perhaps, the killer feature of the KOMODO is the global shutter. There isn’t any competition in this bracket with a true global shutter. The rolling shutter is gone. This may not be a game-changer for everyone, but for action shots or use in crash cam scenarios the removal of that wobble could be a huge benefit.

Another endearing feature of the KOMODO, though rare in cinema cameras, is an integrated LCD with touchscreen ability. It allows for fast and user-friendly control. The integrated lens mount is a Canon RF mount that will work for most people. The KOMODO uses it to great effect. First, it helps gets the size down. Second, it allows you to use Canon’s latest RF lenses in addition to legacy EF lenses via an adapter. The various adapters even add functionality, like a built-in ND filter. And, other adapters will allow the use of practically any other major lens system (that isn’t mirrorless).

The camera records to CFAST 2.0 using R3D files (REDCODE RAW codec). The dynamic range allows for quality images in all light conditions. High-speed action is no challenge for the Red Komodo and even the fastest footage will not have curves or blurring.

In the past, one had to rely on action cameras such as the GoPro series for compact drone footage, especially for FPV (First Person View) drones. While the quality of these cameras is good they don't stand up to the quality of the Red Komodo.

With the compact size, dynamic range, a 6K sensor, and global shutter, the Red Komodo ticks all the right boxes.
